Children’s Hospital is on Franklin Street in Uptown, close to my condo and St Joseph’s Hospital, where Willie works. I went inside and asked for June Staggs, the volunteer contact Tonya had told me about. I was sent to a couple of different departments before I found my way to her, in the children’s wing.

She came out double doors and walked into the waiting room, which was decorated with painted animals on the walls and toys in a play area in the corner. I put down my Highlights magazine – the only reading material I’d found – and stood up and introduced myself as Philip Marlowe.

“I have some questions about volunteering,” I began.

“Oh,” she said, her voice sweet and soft. “We have all the information on our website, and you can sign up there. We’ll check references and such, and if we clear you, we’ll figure out the best fit for you.”

“That sounds great. I got your name from Glenn Mayweather.”

“Glenn is such a nice man. He’s here every Tuesday.”

He’s such a nice man, who stands behind a façade, I thought. “Yes, he told me he was here on Tuesdays. I was going to meet him here yesterday, but I had a conflict.”

“He was only here for a short while, so it’s good you didn’t come.”

“Ah, you’re right. Glenn volunteers with kids who have cancer?”

“Yes. He’s so sweet with them.” She glanced at her watch, the universal sign that my time was up. “I do need to go. If you could check our website.”

“Yes, of course. Thank you for your time. I’ll be in touch.”

She waved at me politely and disappeared back through the double doors. I headed outside, thinking about Glenn as I went. He’d had plenty of time yesterday morning to leave Children’s Hospital and go to Tonya’s apartment to murder her.

But had he?
